Jump starting a car with jumper cables or a booster is a safe method to start a vehicle when the battery is dead. It’s not a complicated process — just the correct order of connecting the cables and a few minutes of time.
We arrive with complete equipment — thick jumper cables or a portable booster. We assess the battery condition and access to the terminals. We connect the cables in the correct order, start the second car or booster, wait a few minutes, and then start your car.
The procedure is safe for both your car and our vehicle. Every jump start is done professionally, with no risk of damaging the electrical system.
In what order to connect jumper cables
The order of connecting the cables is crucial. Incorrect order can damage the battery or electrical system:
- Step 1 — Connect the red cable to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery
- Step 2 — Connect the other end of the red cable to the positive (+) terminal of the good battery (helper car)
- Step 3 — Connect the black cable to the negative (−) terminal of the good battery
- Step 4 — Connect the other end of the black cable to a bare metal part of the dead car's engine (NOT to the negative terminal of the battery)
How to properly disconnect the cables after starting
Disconnecting the cables in the wrong order is also important:
- Wait 1-2 minutes after starting the engine
- Remove the black cable from the bare metal of the dead car
- Remove the black cable from the working car
- Remove the red cable from the working car
- Remove the red cable from your car
How long to drive after jump-starting with cables
After a successful jump-start, it's not enough to drive for a few minutes. The battery needs to charge properly:
• Minimum 20 minutes of driving at a steady speed — this is the minimum for the battery
• 30-45 minutes is ideal for a full charge
• Avoid frequent braking and driving in traffic jams
• Turn off the air conditioning and audio system (reduces the load on the alternator)
• Do not stop for long right after starting
Is jump-starting safe for the battery
Jump-starting is safe if done correctly. Risks arise only from mistakes:
- Correct order of cables — safety guaranteed
- Avoiding short circuits — never connect battery terminals directly
- Cleanliness of the terminal — dirt reduces conductivity
- Checking temperature — if the battery is heating up, stop
- Do not disconnect the cables right after starting — wait 1-2 minutes
How long does it take to jump-start a car
The whole jump-start process takes a few minutes:
- Minutes 0-2: Initial assessment and connecting the cables
- Minutes 2-4: Starting the assisting vehicle and waiting for the current flow
- Minute 4-5: Attempting to start your car
- Minute 5-6: Disconnecting the cables in the correct order
If the car doesn't start the first time, we wait and try again. Too many attempts can further drain the battery.
Can you jump-start a diesel with cables?
Yes, diesel engine cars can be jump-started with jumper cables. The procedure is the same, but there may be additional challenges:
- Diesels require a higher current to start
- In winter, diesel cars are harder to start
- We use thicker cables (min. 16 mm²)
- The waiting time may be longer (3-4 minutes instead of 2)

Frequently asked questions about jump-starting a car
Connect the red cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery, then to the positive terminal of the working battery. Connect the black cable to the negative terminal of the working battery, then to a bare metal part of the dead battery (not to the negative terminal). Wait 2 minutes, start the working vehicle, wait another 2 minutes, and then try to start your car.
The entire sequence: (1) Red to positive of the dead battery (2) Red to positive of the working battery (3) Black to negative of the working battery (4) Black to metal of the dead battery. This is the basic order to remember.
Do not rev the engine while trying to start. Start normally, without pressing the gas pedal. After starting, you can gently increase the RPM to stabilize the engine.
After connecting the cables, wait 2 minutes before starting the working vehicle's engine. Once the working engine is running, wait another 2 minutes to allow the current to flow. Only after these 2 minutes should you try to start your car.
At least 20 minutes of driving. Ideally 30-45 minutes. It's important to maintain a steady speed without frequent braking. Avoid stopping immediately after starting.
No, if done correctly. The risk arises from incorrect connections (short-circuiting the terminals) or improper order. By following the procedure, the battery is safe.
Yes. The procedure is the same, but diesel engines may require thicker cables (at least 16 mm²) due to higher starting power. In winter, jump-starting a diesel can be more difficult, and sometimes you need to wait longer.
The service of jump-starting a car is standard roadside assistance. The cost usually ranges from 150-300 PLN depending on the location. If you are within our range (100 km from Suwałki), call — we will provide the exact price.
You cannot start a car without a battery. The battery is essential for starting the engine — that is its primary function. If the battery is completely dead, it can be charged or replaced.
After 30-45 minutes of driving, the battery should be sufficiently charged for the car to start on its own. If after this time the car still won't start with a clicking sound, there may be an issue with the battery (needs replacement) or the alternator (needs repair).
